정신성을 바탕으로 함으로써 그 형식이나 내용에서 선종(禪宗)의 정신과도 직결 된다고 할 수 있다. 이런 이유로 당대(唐代)의 대화가 왕유(王維701-761)는 “무릇 화도에는 수묵이 제일 으뜸이다. “ 라고 강조 한 바 있다. 그런 의미에서 볼 때 우리 화단의 전통회화 작업을 지향했던 여러 작가들은 지·필·묵을 바탕으로 그 사의적(寫意的) 정신세계와 기법적 특성을 꾸준히 연구해 왔다고 볼 수 있으며 이번에 개인전을 갖는 실경산수화 작가인 강금복 역시 이런 흐름에 적극 동참하고 있는 우리 전통화단의 청년작가 중 한 사람으로 말 할 수 있다. 그는 대학시절부터 전통 남종 문인화와 산수화를 공부했던 작가로서 심의와 정신성에 우위를 두는 문인화적 화풍위에 항상 섬세한 운필과 아취가 조화를 이루는 실경의 세계를 추구해 왔으며 지속적으로 전통의 필법을 바탕으로 한 한국적 정체성에 관하여 주목해 온 작가다. 20년이 넘는 작가의 길을 걸어오는 동안 재야활동을 통해 자신만의 작품제작에만 몰두해왔던 그는 한국 전통화풍에 담겨있는 내적 정체성의 탐구와 현대적 변용에 누구보다도 신중하게 그의 시각을 집중해 왔으며 수묵이 지니고 있는 직관과 함축미를 바탕으로 한 한국적 사경산수의 또 다른 의미를 찾고자 노력해 왔다고 이야기 할 수 있다. 그는 요즘 들어 미술대전등 화단의 대표적 작가 등용문인 각종 공모전에서 수상하는 한편 문화관광부에서 주관하는 아트뱅크에 작품이 소장되는 등 그 역량을 인정받고 있는데 그의 작품세계는 섬세한 필선과 유려한 여백의 미감이 조화를 이룸으로써 언뜻 보면 산수화이면서도 문인화 같은 운치와 여유를 느끼게 해 준다. 이것은 대상의 해석방법과 용묵, 용필법등의 작가만의 독자적인 표현 특성에서 기인하는 것으로 절제된 미의식이 내재된 온유한 최근의 화면에서 더욱 두드러지게 나타나기도 한다. 특히 이번 전시에서는 고즈넉한 달밤을 배경으로 한 섬세한 필치의 소나무 묘사나 시골마을의 한적한 여유로움이 묻어나는 작품들을 선보이고 있는데 이번출품작들에서도 역시 그가 평소에 보여주었던 간결한 운필의 조화와 유려한 여백의 미, 한국적 정서가 투영된 부드럽고 습윤한 미감 등을 기본으로 한 한국 현대 실경산수화의 정수를 잘 보여주고 있다고 하겠다. 북송의 소동파는 왕유를 평하여 “그의 시속에 그림이 있고 그 그림 속에 시가 있다”고 하여 그림 속에 내재된 문학성에 관한 문인화의 의미와 형식미에 대하여 얘기 하였는데 작가가 이번에 보여주고 있는 여러 작품들 속에는 맑은 여운과 깔끔한 필치를 바탕으로 한 옛 선인들의 글귀를 생각나게 하는 격조 있는 문인적 기운이 내포되어 있음을 알 수 있게 해준다. 화가의 길을 가기로 결심했던 어린시절부터 그는 호남화단의 원로선배들로부터 엄격한 화가로서의 교육을 받음으로써 겸손하면서도 충실하게 기량을 다져 왔으며 이제 독자적인 경지로 그의 작품세계를 이끌어가고 있음을 보여준다. 따라서 현재 그의 작품세계가 사생을 기초로 한 현대적 실경화풍을 보여주고 있을지라도 그 뿌리는 전통남종화에 두고 있음을 알 수 있어 초기 그가 작가로서 입문하기위해 노심초사하던 청년시절부터 현재까지 걸어온 흔적을 되짚어보면 그 역시 우리 선배화가 들이 추구해왔던 전통산수화가로서의 품격과 필의를 충실하게 따르려 하고 있음을 알게 된다. 장언원은 <역대명화기>에서 “무릇 생각을 움직여 붓을 휘두를 때에 스스로 그리는 것을 의미하면 곧 그림을 잃게 된다. 붓을 휘두를 때 뜻이 그림에 있지 않아야 그림을 얻을 수 있다.”라고 말하였다. 그런 이유로 운치가 넘치는 달밤의 정경을 담백한 필치의 문인화기법과 사경화풍으로 그려내고 있는 작가의 실경산수화는 그 자체만으로도 우리들에게 옛 선인들이 지녔던 정신세계와 예술의 향기를 짐작 할 수 있게 해 주고 있다. 작가의 이번 개인전은 그가 지금까지 추구해 온 현대 실경산수화가로서의 결실을 중간 정리 해보는 소중한 시간이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 그의 이번 출품작들은 향후 그가 나아가야 할 묵향과 아취의 세계를 예측 해 볼 수 있는 흔치 않는 기회를제공 할 것으로 기대된다. 작가의 변 나즈막히 깔린듯
