예술상은 예술을 지원하는가, 오히려 억압하는가. 국가가 수여하는 훈장에서 지자체의 예술상까지 수도 없이 많은 상들이 존재하는 상황에서 예술상이 어떤 시스템으로 작동하고 있는지 살펴보는 것은 예술상의 바람직한 상을 그려보기 위해 꼭 필요한 일일 것이다. 2월 15일 문예아카데미 강의실에서 열린 민예총 문화정책 토론회 “예술상은 없다, 예술상을 엎다”는 이러한 질문들에 대한 심도있는 논의들이 진행되는 자리였다. 토론회는 기조발제와 장르별 사례발표, 종합토론 등으로 진행되었다.

기조발제를 맡은 심상용 미술평론가는 “예술상의 허구에서 벗어나기”를 주제로 한 발표에서 베니스 비엔날레의 사례를 들며 시상제도가 갖는 폐쇄순환계의 양상을 지적했다. “베니스의 판단에 파리가 동의하고 뉴욕이 인증하고 그 결과를 다시 베니스가 반영하는” 메커니즘을 통해 상에 대한 의구심을 제거하는, ‘제도가 사유를 억압’하는 현상이 나타나고 있다는 것이다.

발제자는 현대의 수상제도는 실질적으로 검열의 역할을 수행하고 있다고 진단했다. “수상자는 자신의 미학적 노선과 성취에 대해 계시와 언약을 소유하는 반면 비수상자들은 궤도의 수정이나 중단, 포기를 종용받게 될 것”이라는 것이다. 이러한 과정을 통해 하나의 주관적 태도나 불확실한 입장들이 어느새 객관이자 불변고정의 진실로 도약하는 순간이 도달한다고 발제자는 지적했다. 결국 “좋은 예술에 메달을 걸어주는 것이 아니라, 메달을 건 예술이 좋은 예술이 된다”는 것이다.
 
그렇다면 현실을 극복하기 위해서는 어떤 방법들이 가능할 것인가. 발제자는 현실의 수상제도를 무효화하기 위한 투쟁이나 개인적인 수상거부가 의미가 없지 않으나 사회적 현실을 좌우할 수 없다는 점을 먼저 상기시켰다. 오히려 지금 필요한 것은 ‘복수(複數)의 역사들’에 대한 인식이라는 것이다. “권위있는 대회의 수상자나 거대한 행사성 전시들의 명단에서 발견되는 이름들로 된 역사”는 단지 하나의 역사에 불과한 것이므로 그것이 유일한 실체이거나 불변하는 진리라고 볼 이유가 없다는 것이다. 복수의 역사들, 복수의 가치들, 복수의 세계들에 대한 인식을 확인하는 것이 현실극복을 위한 예술적 실천이 될 수 있다는 통찰이다.

사례발표에 나선 토론자들은 장르에 따른 편차가 존재하지만 발제자의 의견에 대부분 동의를 표하며 예술상이 갖고 있는 문제들을 하나하나 꼽아나갔다.

고봉준 문학평론가는 올해의 예술상과 이상문학상을 중심으로 문학상의 문제들을 지적했다. 한국의 문학상들은 ‘공로상과 작품상을 절충한 스타일’로 구성되어 있다고 지적한 그는 문학상에서 가장 큰 문제 중 하나는 몇몇 출판사들의 카르텔이 상들을 독점하고 이는 다시 그 출판사들의 독점력을 확보하게 해 준다는 데 있다고 지적했다. 타 장르와 달리 문학에서는 문학상이 여전히 마케팅의 한 방안으로 유력하다는 것이다. 고봉준 평론가의 발표는 한국의 문학상들이 출판사들의 독과점 나눠먹기와 상업적 활용을 위한 문학상의 배치, 제도운용의 문제 등을 두루 갖추고(?) 있음을 보여주었다. 특히, 그는 이상문학상을 비롯하여 문학인들의 이름을 걸고 있는 상들이 실제로 그 작가들에 대한 미학적 가치에 대한 탐구나 연구도 없고, 수상작들이 어떤 부분에서 그 작가를 이어받고 있는지에 대한 판단도 없다고 지적했다.

미술분야의 사례를 발표한 추계예술대학의 최진욱 교수는 자신의 공모전 심사위원 경험을 사례로 들며 공모전이 긍정성을 가지려면 심사위원들간의 충분한 토론이 필요하다는 의견을 피력했다. 심사위원들이 옹호하는 미학적 가치의 기준이 제각각인 상황에서 단지 덧셈으로만 진행하는 평가는 불완전할 수밖에 없다는 것이다. 따라서 자신이 옹호하는 가치를 위해 싸우고 충돌하는 분위기가 갖춰져야 하는 것이 필수적인 요건이라는 의견이었다.

“국악賞인가 국악喪인가”라는 제목으로 국악분야의 사례발표를 진행한 김태균 음악평론가는 국악계의 일반화된 경연대회 비리문제는 국악계 내부의 문제가 외부로 드러난 것이라고 지적했다. 국악을 국악인만의 것으로 인식하는 문화가 국악의 사회화나 민족화에 대한 인식의 부족을 낳았다는 것이다. 이는 연주자 중심의 전승과 경연이라는 특권적인 문화행위, 상대적으로 빈약한 평론문화의 부재에서 비롯된다고 이야기했다.

그는 국악경연대회가 제자리를 잡기 위해서 ▲국악의 사회화라는 관점에서의 인식변화 ▲종합경연대회에서 특화된 경연대회로 ▲지역의 특색과 결합된 대회의 구조조정 ▲대통령상을 문화적 상징의 수상으로 변경 ▲대회의 객관성과 공정성을 위한 장치 마련 등이 필요하다고 꼽았다.

연극분야의 사례발표를 맡은 김소연 연극평론가는 ‘기우뚱한 균형’이라는 연극평론가 안치운의 말을 인용하여 예술상의 개선방안을 전했다. 대부분의 연극상들이 '수월성과 완성도'라는 애매한 기준을 내세우고 있는데 이는 결코 예술적 가치를 평가할 수 있는 척도가 아니라는 것이다. 불편부당한 공정성이라는 허위의 관념을 벗고 도리어 '상'이 논란과 논쟁의 발화점을 떠맡는 것, 연극계의 담론이 교차하고 논쟁이 만발하게 하는 것이 필요하다는 것이다. 그러기 위해서는 예술상들이 뚜렷한 가치지향을 가져야 한다고 주장했다.

이어진 토론에서 참가자들은 예술상이 억압기제로서의 권위로 존재하지 않기 위해서는 다양한 가치들이 경쟁하며 상대화하는 것이 필요하다는 의견을 나눴다. 심상용은 현실적인 의미에서 예술상들의 개선지점을 “영향력에 대한 자각을 통한 자기절제”와, “상의 정신과 상의 가치에 대한 강조” 등 두 가지로 꼽았다. 이렇게 본다면 대통령상을 비롯한 국가적 상훈은 가급적 자제되는 것이 보다 바람직한 방향이라는 데에 토론자들이 의견을 모았다. 즉 ‘최고’라는 것은 가치라고 보기 힘들기 때문이다.

토론회에서는 흔히 사회적으로 화제가 되는 담합과 야합, 뇌물과 비리에 대한 것들은 검찰에서 해결해야 할 부분이며 (물론 예술계 내에서 자정작용도 필요하겠지만 말이다) 결국, 예술상이 제자리를 잡기 위해서는 객관성, 공정성의 신화를 벗어난 가치들의 경쟁이 필요하다는 의견이다. 이를 통해 가치들(예술상들)의 상대화와 함께 예술생태계의 건강성을 높일 수 있다는 것이다.
